Welcome! I'm Liz Briggs and this is my 14th year of teaching middle school math with nine of them being a Raptor here at Stuart Middle School. I have LOVED math since the third grade and had wanted to be a teacher since I learned to write. Although I set out to become a teacher, I didn't start my post college career in teaching. I took my mathematics degree and put it to work in corporate America for eight years. I was an inventory analyst, production planner and a real estate agent before deciding to return to school to pursue my masters in Education. Here I am now, teaching!
A little about me…I like to consider myself a Colorado native since my family moved to the place I call my hometown, Colorado Springs, when I was six years old (that really was when the dinosaurs roamed). I am a daughter, sister, an auntie and a mom. My parents were married for 50 years before my dad passed away in 2013. I am the youngest of four (my siblings are the best) and Auntie to four incredible young adults who serve for our country (Army, Navy, Air Force). I am most proud of being a mom to my three amazing kids, Lily, Bella and Kai. I LOVE to travel and explore, especially with my kids! The outdoors is a sanctuary to me, so I'm always game for a hike, ride (bike- road or mountain, snowboard, wakeboard), or playtime at the park, pool, or reservoir. I do like to challenge myself to sign up and complete various races…it started with 5k's, 10k's and Sprint Triathlons and has built up to half marathons and a half Ironman Triathlon.
Each year I teach, I learn many new ways to approach math problems and it's because of you, my students (present and past), who share your thinking with me and others in the class. We truly do learn from each other, so be willing to take a risk and share your thinking. I'm looking forward to helping those of you who have a fixed mindset, of "I can't do math", change to a growth mindset and believe you CAN do math and make sense of it. The only wrong answer is a blank paper, so take a risk!! I hope to challenge those of you who love and "get" math easily by building your level of inquiry and perseverance…is there more than one way to get the same answer?
I'm excited for the year of growing and learning and look forward to making this your best math year yet!
